Titre s'insérant dans une série de courts romans réalistes, plus ou moins inspirés de faits réels, ayant comme thématique centrale des catastrophes naturelles dévastatrices auxquelles se voient confrontés de jeunes héros fictifs. Dans cet opus: Alex Mason, onze ans, emménage avec sa famille à Glory, une petite ville de Colombie-Britannique sise au pied de très hautes montagnes. Il ne tarde pas à s'y lier d'amitié avec Ben, un jeune garçon qui a perdu sa mère et qui partage sa passion pour la construction de forts de neige. Un beau samedi après-midi, les deux jeunes garçons entreprennent d'ailleurs d'en fabriquer un aux proportions épiques afin de clore le bec à Ollie, un camarade de classe qui ne cesse de se moquer d'eux.
